Current vacancies

Young Writers Programme & Partnerships Manager (Manchester)

This is a newly-created position, which will play a key role in enabling First Story’s exciting plans for growth in the coming years. We want to offer provision to young people in Greater Manchester and the wider North West. The post-holder will be responsible for establishing and helping to embed First Story in this new operating region. You’ll ensure appropriate school partnerships are identified and secured; that a network of cultural and HE delivery partners are researched and appropriate relationships to extend the offer of the programme are secured; and that our year one ‘taster’ version of the Young Writers Programmes is ready to launch in a number of schools in the Manchester region in the 2022/23 academic year.

How to apply

Closing date 21 February 2022. Interviews 3 March.

Key responsibilities

The post-holder will need to develop a knowledge of the regional need for our provision, and to identify and cultivate relationships with eligible schools in the region. They will also be expected to establish and maintain relationships with potential collaborative organisations and delivery partners, embedding First Story within cultural and education networks in the region, with the aim of extending local opportunities for our young writers, teachers and partner schools and teachers. This role also involves identifying and building a network of suitable writers to deliver our programme in the region.

Key relationships

The post-holder will be supported by a small central team based in London (primarily providing communications, fundraising and administrative support), as well as closely working with their fellow regional leads working remotely in First Story’s other operating regions, as part of a programme team which is led by a Head of Programmes.

Key benefits

  • FTE salary £28,000 – 30,000
  • 0.6 FTE
  • 1 year fixed term contract
  • FTE 25 days annual leave + public holidays + Christmas

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We want to meet the aims and commitments set out in our equality, diversity and inclusion policy. This includes not discriminating under the Equality Act 2010 and building an accurate picture of the people who apply for our vacancies, as well as who work for us. Please help us gain a clearer picture of the people who apply to First Story, by volunteering some more information. Thank you.

Work experience for young people

We’re keen to offer opportunities to young people — and particularly our Young Writers Programme alumni — to help you gain practical work experience that could enhance your academic or career prospects. First Story’s office is located in central London, which we know limits opportunities for young people living further away or in other parts of the country. We may be able to offer work experience based in our other regions (East Midlands and the North of England), depending on the time of year and circumstances. In the first instance please email us to tell us more about yourself and what you want to learn.
