Extended deadline: University of Cambridge Bursary Scheme

14 November 2019 //  by First Story

First Story is collaborating with The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) to provide two new tuition fee bursaries. The joint scheme encourages teachers or librarians working in disadvantaged settings to enrol on the part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing course beginning April 2020, with fees reduced by 50 per cent.

I count myself as very lucky to have had this amazing opportunity to develop my skills and confidence. I have learnt that I am able to achieve a great deal when I step outside of my comfort zone.

Angela Andrew, bursary winner in 2019 and First Story lead teacher at Haven High Academy in Boston, Lincolnshire.

The bursaries are intended to support applicants who work in state-funded settings such as state schools, public libraries, local authorities, the NHS or HM Prisons Service and third-sector or not-for-profit organisations. PCert students will develop skills as teachers of creative writing and strategies for their intended teaching contexts. The course is delivered on a part-time study basis, which makes it accessible to those in work or with other commitments.

This is one of a range of courses on offer at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Creative Writing, based at the Institute of Continuing Education. The Centre has developed a reputation for teaching and supporting those engaged in creative writing across all forms.

We are keen to work with teachers and other professionals delivering creative writing education in disadvantaged settings but realise that tuition fees are often a barrier to enrolling on postgraduate study.  These new bursaries, working closely with First Story, will promote access, and ultimately benefit the schools, libraries and other community settings in which the successful applicants will work.

Dr James Gazzard, Director of the University’s Institute of Continuing Education

Applying for a First Story – Institute of Continuing Education Bursary

Applicants are required to apply for a bursary after making an application for the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing course through the Institute’s online application portal.

The deadline for applications is 6th January 2020.

The course will:

  • develop your skills as a teacher of creative writing
  • develop your knowledge of the theories and practices of the teaching of creative writing
  • develop your repertoire of teaching, course design and assessment methods
  • develop a reflexive and critical awareness of your own teaching practice

For more detailed information, and to apply, visit the Cambridge website.
