Flashers’ Club is a quarterly ‘flash fiction’ event in Cheltenham where writers can read their original short fiction to an audience. It’s a friendly, supportive and inclusive atmosphere, where all writers are welcome — published or unpublished, from seasoned readers to debutants.
The idea for the night was inspired by the life of writer Nicola York (1982-2016). In Nicola’s memory, friend Alex started the Flashers’ Club, pledging to donate all profits to First Story.
It’s important to at least make a gesture towards the fact that writing stories is valuable work.
Alex, Flashers Club
Like First Story, Flashers’ Club believes that writers should be paid for their work, and that writing ought to be a viable way to make a living. As such, every Flashers’ Club event has featured a special guest writer paid an appearance fee (however nominal that amount may have had to be!)
Sadly, Alex recently announced that it’s finally time to hang up the mic on her hugely successful event, with a growing family and new professional ventures ahead.
We want to publicly thank Alex for her passion and commitment to support First Story’s mission.
