Delivering our provision in the pandemic
We are keen to assist our partner schools to implement pandemic recovery plans. First Story’s Young Writers Programme has much to contribute, building confidence, supporting the development of social and emotional skills, as well as encouraging engagement with learning across the curriculum.
During the peak of the pandemic, in 2020 and 2021, we consulted extensively with partner schools to develop a flexible delivery model that accommodates post-pandemic restrictions and adaptations.
Flexible timetabling
If necessary, we can work flexibly within a school’s revised timetable by delivering First Story workshops during core hours e.g. as part of timetabled enrichment or recovery curriculum activities.
Blended learning
We have developed a blended model, combining in person and digital provision, to keep First Story programmes running with minimal disruption. Writers-in-Residence will deliver in person workshops whenever possible, while being fully prepared to convert to remote provision as necessary. Live virtual workshops can be delivered via your school’s choice of online platform. First Story’s extended offer of events and activities, and our annual Young Writers Festival, have also be developed in hybrid formats for digital platforms and virtual engagement.
Alternative delivery models
First Story’s Young Writer’s programme, which is designed to provide deep learning for a targeted group, usually engages up to 20 students over 16 weeks of intensive writing workshops, beginning in the autumn term. Anticipating that some schools may find this model more challenging to accommodate in the context of pandemic related restrictions, to minimise barriers to participation, we created alternative delivery models that schools may choose from. Where we can, we’re keen to work with your school’s particular circumstances.
